What a weekend

As you know, on Friday, Anne and I bought a house. That evening and pretty much the entire rest of the weekend was spent uncovering the original hardwood floors of the house. The carpeting came out pretty easily on Friday, thanks for the help, Dan. Saturday and Sunday were spent heating up vinyl tiles with irons and scraping them up.

This truly sucked. I’m actually pretty amazed that we got all of the tile up in the one bedroom, the hallway and the entire kitchen and pantry. Whoever’s idea it was to put vinyl tile into a bedroom; it was a bad idea.

We’re looking for someone to sand and refinish the floors for us this week. And we’ll probably move onto cleaning the basement and laying the carpet down there for a makeshift workout room and maybe start removing paint from the front porch.

More photos here.

  1. Awesome! Looks like you guys got a good start.

Any painting that needs to be done, should be done before the floors get finished.

Don’t hesitate to call if you need a hand.

  2. Painting is a good idea. Problem is we have to choose paint colors first, that could take a while and we’d like to have the floors done so we can move in at least.

  3. Matt, It looks like your hard work will really pay off in the long term. In looking at your wood floors…if your going to have them sanded and stained (at some point) they will probably turn out to be stunning. Good luck and keep up the hard work. Congratulations!

  4. Thanks!

We’re going to have them sanded and then just varnished; no stain. Preserving the natural light color of the wood, it’s pine, will keep the rooms bright and should give us more options for choosing rich paint colors.

  5. actually….the floors are maple, which are also usually left natural because of its nice light yellow tone.
