220 Volts

Ever install a 220 Volt outlet? Well I probably will be soon. Pray that I don’t kill myself or burn the house down!

Actually, I’m not too worried about that. I’m just hoping that our box has a double breaker already installed. Apparently a 220 volt outlet is basically just two 110 volt hot wires and a neutral and a ground. (This makes sense, I’d just never thought about it before.) So you have to connect the two hot wires to two separate breakers. I don’t really want to be rewiring the breaker box to add a double breaker. I think there probably is one there already for the AC unit? Though I’m not sure if I can just pick up on that circuit or if I have to add a new double breaker for each 220 volt appliance you connect? You probably have to add a new one. Poop. At least there looks to be room on the panel for another double.

Another relevant question is, does Milwaukee require a permit for doing this sort of thing? Does getting a permit mean you have to get a licensed electrician to do the work? What are the consequences of not having a permit?
